Railway unveils ₹14,000-cr development plan for 50 stations
The Indian Railways has decided to develop 50 railway stations at an investment of ₹14,000 crore. Niti Aayog, the government‘s think-tank, is pushing for a comprehensive plan that envisages a holistic development of the area around railway stations, which has strong potential to draw private investment. The cost of development of railway stations in metros is ₹10,000 crore; while in tier-2 cities it has been pegged at about ₹4,000 crore, Niti Aayod sources said that the stations should be developed to give people a good travelling experience. CEO, Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant in a recent missive to Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav stressed the need to take up the development on a priority basis. Currently, the process is on for setting up an Empowered Group of Secretaries to drive the process. CEO Niti Aayog, chairman Railway Board, Economic Affairs secretary, and Housing and Urban Affairs secretary will be part of this group.
