In a major move, the Indian Railway and Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) have entered into a joint venture to rebuild around 78 hectares of land to house over 12 lakh slum dwellers. In this connection, Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu has already given a go-ahead for the plan, under which the projects would be executed by the respective state governments in a joint venture with the railways and SRA. On this score, Railways will ensure that adequate land required for the ongoing and future expansion cleared before the slum rehabilitation plan is implemented. As of now, about 12 lakh people live in slums spread over 37.25 hectares owned by the Central Railway and 41.2 hectares of the Western Railway in the city. The rehabilitation on railway land will also be undertaken in a manner whereby, the state governments have been asked to submit a detailed proposal for approval by the railway board, he claimed.
