Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), marking one of India’s fastest airport terminal projects to progress from design unveiling to commissioning. The development highlights the rapid expansion of aviation infrastructure nationwide.

The Prime Minister had unveiled the terminal’s design in February during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit. Commercial operations are targeted to begin by the end of February 2026, enabled by a compressed delivery schedule and a comprehensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme. The ORAT process included guidance from an international expert team to streamline systems, processes, manpower deployment and passenger flow before the terminal becomes operational.

Developed by Guwahati International Airport and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the new terminal, named The Bamboo Orchids, features an architectural theme inspired by Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and indigenous bamboo species from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The project aims to redefine the passenger experience while reflecting the cultural identity of the Northeast.
