PM Modi Calls for Global Action to Build Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for urgent and united global efforts to build disaster-resilient infrastructure, especially in coastal and vulnerable regions, in light of increasing natural calamities fueled by climate change. Addressing the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure 2025 via videoconference, PM Modi emphasized that “infrastructure must withstand time and tide” and urged nations to prioritize resilience in all future development.
Highlighting the conference theme, Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions, PM Modi pointed to recent disasters such as Cyclone Remal, Hurricane Beryl, and Typhoon Usagi, as reminders of the urgent need for robust infrastructure and proactive disaster management.
Recalling India’s own experiences with the 1999 super-cyclone and the 2004 tsunami, he noted how India has rebuilt with resilience by constructing cyclone shelters and establishing a tsunami warning system that benefits 29 countries.
PM Modi outlined five global priorities to strengthen disaster resilience:
- Integrating resilience education and skill development into higher education.
- Creating a global digital repository of best practices and disaster recovery experiences.
- Innovative and accessible financing mechanisms for developing countries.
- Focused support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), recognizing them as Large Ocean Countries.
- Enhancing early warning systems and last-mile communication for timely disaster response.
He also highlighted the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure’s (CDRI) efforts in 25 Small Island Developing States to build resilient homes, hospitals, schools, and energy and water systems.
Concluding his address, PM Modi urged the global community to work together in creating a strong, climate-resilient future, where development is safeguarded against the growing frequency and intensity of disasters.
