Patel Engineering Achieves Major Milestone in USBRL Project

Patel Engineering Limited
Patel Engineering Limited has successfully completed substantial work on Tunnel T-15 and part of Tunnel T-14 for the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project as of July 4, 2024. This achievement highlights the company’s engineering capabilities and commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.

Awarded by IRCON International Limited, the project involved constructing a main tunnel and an escape tunnel, each 14.3 km long, as well as the foundation and sub-structure for Bridge No. 61 on the Katra-Banihal Section of the USBRL Project. The total project value is approximately Rs. 2,300 crores.

The completion of Tunnel T-15 and part of Tunnel T-14 is a significant step towards improving all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India. The project, located in a challenging Himalayan region, included various tunneling activities such as heading, benching, invert excavation, kerb concreting, and installing Geo-textile, Geo-membrane, reinforcement, and concrete lining.

To manage geological challenges like loose rocks during tunnel blasting, an umbrella-type pipe roofing system was used. The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) technology was adopted for the tunnel works, involving around 1,600 skilled and semi-skilled workers during the peak construction phase.

The entire USBRL project spans 272 kilometers and is of national importance. The Indian Railways conducted a successful trial run from Sangaldan to Reasi at a speed of 110 km/hr, passing through Tunnel T-15 and part of Tunnel T-14.

Kavita Shirvaikar, Managing Director of Patel Engineering Limited, remarked, “This accomplishment not only showcases our capacity to tackle substantial challenges but also underscores our dedication to infrastructure development that serves communities and fosters regional integration. The USBRL project will decrease travel time and generate new opportunities for socio-economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire team and my sincere gratitude for their meticulous planning and the tireless efforts of our engineers and workers, which have culminated in this successful milestone.”

The substantial completion of Tunnel T-15 and part of Tunnel T-14 represents a significant enhancement in critical infrastructure and economic opportunities, demonstrating Patel Engineering Limited's commitment to overcoming challenges with innovative solutions and rigorous safety standards. This milestone sets a benchmark in the construction industry and advances regional development.
