Nitin Gadkari Orders QR Codes on Highways for Transparency; IRF Welcomes the Move
Gadkari also instructed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and highway developers to create their own YouTube channels to upload regular progress videos of highway construction at various stages. Emphasizing ownership and responsibility in infrastructure projects, he said, “Why should I take the blame alone? The QR code will have information of the contractor, consultant, and officers who cleared the road. If a road is bad and people are complaining about it on social media, take it seriously. From A to Z in road construction, we need ownership, sincerity, and a positive approach. Roads must be good, and they must stay good.”
He added that if citizens are paying tolls, they deserve international-quality roads. “Weather or poor bitumen cannot be excuses. If the surface is not comfortable, fix it — cost may increase but comfort is non-negotiable.”
The International Road Federation (IRF) welcomed the move, calling it a bold step towards transparency and participatory governance. IRF president emeritus K.K. Kapila said the initiative marks a significant milestone in building a more accountable and technology-driven road infrastructure management system.
