Adding to the road infrastructure of the state, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently awarded a Rs. 1,444-cr contract entailing scope of work for widening of a highway stretch in Punjab to GR Infra projects Ltd. In this connection, the road building nodal agency has issued Letter of Award (LoA) for the development of national highway section under phase IV of National Highways Development Projects (NHDP). The project pertains to four-laning of 81 km stretch of Phagwara-Rupnagar stretch crisscrossing through Banga town and the proposed Nawashahir bypass and terminates at Rupnagar. After completion, it will become the shortest route for movement between Amritsar and Chandigarh, two most important cities of Punjab, and also tourist hubs for Sikh pilgrimages. The project will help in expediting the improvement of infrastructure in Punjab and in reducing the time and cost of travel. The project will have four structures (Grade separator/flyover), one major bridge, 22 minor bridges, one vehicular underpass and one pedestrian underpass and it would be executed on hybrid annuity mode and scheduled time of completion is 30 months from the date of commencement of construction work.
