The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has speeded up construction work on the 51-km long Bairabi-Sairang new rail line at an investment of ₹5,021.45 crore. The project will connect Mizoram to the Indian Railways network up to Bairabi railway station, a gateway to the state, Railway Board Chairman, Vinod Kumar Yadav, said that the project will connect the capital city of Mizoram – Aizawl and has been declared as a national project which is being monitored closely by the PMO. The new rail line project includes construction of as many as 32 underground tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, 16 cut and cover tunnels, 5 Road Under Bridges (RUB) and 5 Road Over Bridges (ROB). The line will cover four railway stations, namely, Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang stations. There will be as many as six bridges of pier heights of over 70 m, with a maximum height of 117m. Located in seismic Zone V, all the structures have been designed and checked by institutions like IIT Guwahati and IIT Kanpur.
