The Union transport minister has directed states and UTs to expedite the land acquisition for road projects with the funds of ₹25,000 crore lying unused with them. Calling for speedier decision-making, the Minister said that it is critical for accelerated economic development of the country. As many as 1,315 projects covering 49,238 km and worth ₹5,89,648 crore are currently under progress, of which 819 projects covering 30,301 km costing about ₹3,06,250 crore are delayed. He also asked the states to resolve issues such as pending land acquisition and environment clearance. General (Retd) V.K. Singh also called for greater coordination between the states and the Centre for faster project implementation. He also warned that no separate registration or charges should be insisted upon in case works are being shifted from one Central agency to another. Such practices should be dispensed with immediate effect as the Centre has already allowed road construction. He pointed out that transportation of labor to road building and factories may be facilitated by strictly following the health protocols of maintaining social distance, wearing masks, using sanitizers etc.
