Indian Railways Runs First Direct Container Freight Train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar, Nepal
The 40-wagon train, carrying canola, completed its journey under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol. The new arrangement enables containerised cargo to move directly from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transshipment at the border, reducing transit time, logistics costs and cargo handling.
The service builds on the broad-gauge rail link between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal, inaugurated in June 2023. Following the revised Letter of Exchange signed in November 2025, direct commercial freight movement to Biratnagar has now become operational.
The direct rail service is expected to improve supply chain efficiency and provide a faster and more economical option for importers, exporters and logistics operators. It will also support increased rail-based cross-border trade while strengthening economic connectivity between India and Nepal.
