Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line Transforms Mizoram’s Connectivity, Freight & Tourism in One Year
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, along with the Sairang railway station, the line has brought Mizoram closer to the national railway network and reduced its dependence on road transport across the state’s challenging hill terrain.
The railway corridor includes 153 bridges, comprising 55 major bridges, 88 minor bridges and 10 Road Over Bridges/Road Under Bridges. Six bridges are more than 70 metres high, with the tallest reaching 114 metres. The alignment also includes 45 tunnels spanning nearly 16 km. The line connects Bairabi with Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang, bringing railway connectivity to the threshold of Aizawl.
Passenger connectivity has expanded significantly following the commissioning of the line. Sairang is now connected through long-distance services to Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi, including the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express. A Sairang-Silchar passenger service was also introduced in January 2026, strengthening connectivity with Assam’s Barak Valley.
Over the past year, these services have completed more than 1,100 trips and carried over 15 lakh passengers. Demand has remained high, with trains operating at more than 100% capacity on every trip. The Sairang-Kolkata service recorded average occupancy of more than 140%, while the Sairang-Guwahati service maintained occupancy above 110%. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express recorded average occupancy of more than 145%. Together, the services generated Rs 54 crore in ticket sales.
Sairang railway station itself handled more than 5.54 lakh passenger movements during the year, averaging around 3,300 passengers a day.
The railway line has also significantly changed freight transportation to Mizoram. The first cargo train reached Sairang on September 14, 2025, carrying more than 26,000 bags of cement from the STAR Cement siding at Tetelia near Guwahati. The first automobile consignment, comprising 119 Maruti cars, arrived from Changsari near Guwahati in December 2025.
More than 2,500 wagons of freight have been delivered at Sairang over the past year. Around 70% of the cargo comprised construction materials such as cement, stone and sand, supporting housing and infrastructure projects while reducing transportation time and logistics costs. Other freight included rice, fertilizers and automobiles, with 156 wagons carrying vehicles.
Rail connectivity has also improved access to markets and created new opportunities for local enterprises. The first parcel consignment from Sairang was booked on September 19, 2025, carrying Anthurium flowers to Delhi through the parcel van of the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express. The railway is expected to provide a wider distribution channel for Mizoram’s handloom, bamboo, cane, crafts and other local products.
The improved connectivity has also supported tourism and education. Direct rail services from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Silchar have made Mizoram more accessible to domestic travellers, while providing students with easier access to universities, professional institutions, coaching centres, examinations and academic events outside the state.
According to the information released by the government, tourism in Mizoram has grown by more than 86% since the introduction of railway connectivity. Increased visitor movement is also supporting hotels, homestays, restaurants, taxis, guides, cultural enterprises and local markets.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line has therefore evolved from a major infrastructure project into a new mobility and logistics gateway for Mizoram, connecting passengers and businesses with national markets while supporting tourism, construction, education and regional economic activity.
