KIOCL launches ₹850-cr upgrade in Mangaluru

The export-oriented unit under the ministry of steel and mines, KIOCL Ltd, has launched a modernization and diversification program worth ₹850 crore at Mangaluru in order to achieve about 20% increase in pellet production during 2019-20. The company has a 3.5 million ton per annum coast-based pellet plant and has plans to set up a coke oven plant and a ductile iron spun pipe (DISP) manufacturing plant, said CMD, M V Subba Rao. He informed that they are currently conducting an environmental impact assessment study, and upgrading the pellet plant by installing pressure filters in place of vacuum filters; this will help reduce cost of production and improve quality of pellets. The company has invested ₹150 crore and has issued work orders for installing re-claimers and metal handling facilities.

The DISP plant will have an annual capacity of 2 lakh metric tons and funding will be met by internal accruals as the company has a cash reserve of ₹1,800 crore. Ductile iron spun pipes are used across the world because of their superiority over cast iron spun pipes for which there is a huge demand from various state governments and urban development bodies. During the last fiscal, KIOCL expanded its presence in new markets such as the UK and West Asia and in 2019-20 it aims to expand into Brazil and Canada. It has signed a MoU with steel mills in Japan and West Asia for long-term supply contracts.
