Indian Railways fast-tracks 505 big ticket projects

Southern Railway
The Indian Railways has speeded up construction of 505 projects - including 263 doubling of the existing lines, 185 new lines and 57 gauge conversion- all of which are currently under various stages of implementation. Several projects are facing a cost overrun owing to issues such as land acquisition shifting of utilities, and delay in statutory clearances. At the same time, immediate attention is being given to completion of dedicated freight corridors as the western and eastern corridors will increase the total traffic of Railways by at least 144 million tons (mt) by 2022. The Indian Railways has set a target to get at least 50 percent share of the country's freight traffic by 2030 from 33 percent, currently. The revised cost estimates for the two corridors are coming to around ₹81,459 crore, while the total expenditure incurred on them till December 2018 was around ₹45,000 crore, as per NITI Aayog's recent statement.
