One of the most significant components of the Smart City project has finally been approved by the state PWD and tenders will be floated very shortly. Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) has already completed soil testing, CEO, SCTL, P Balakiran said that the construction work on the ₹604 crore project is set to start shortly. Smart Roads project involves five components: storm water drains, underground ducting of utilities, road and junction improvement, way finding signage and markers and cycle tracks, footpath railings, pavers and curb stones. The sources of funds include Smart City grant of ₹526.16 crore, ₹46.82 crore from central schemes and civic body‘s own source of ₹31.96 crore. Carriageway improvement, planting of tree saplings, street lighting and junction redesigning are included under road and junction improvement. Smart Roads and underground ducting component under Smart City scheme covers a total length of 72.5 km in nine wards under area-based development. The first phase will cover Chalai-Manaveeyam Road; the second phase will cover the C V Raman Road-Althara-Attakulangara stretch; and the third phase will cover MG Road under KRFB.
