Karnataka takes PPP route to redevelop slums

redevelop slums
The Karnataka government is taking the PPP route to build four lakh houses for slum-dwellers across the state as part of its slum redevelopment program. The draft of the policy will soon be brought before the CM and housing minister. The housing policy aims to construct 7 lakh houses in rural Karnataka and 14 lakh houses in urban centres. The PPP players will build 250-300 sqft to 300-450 sqft 2BHK units. Original slum-dwellers are likely to get houses free or at nominal rates, while others will have to shell out ₹12 lakh for a unit. The urban development department has proposed incentives such as additional floor area ratio (FAR) and transfer of development rights for private developers taking up slum redevelopment projects. Karnataka has about 5,200 slums with a population of about 90 lakh in urban areas.
