Kandla Port Expansion Projects Worth ₹57,000 Cr Announced

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, announced major initiatives to expand the capacity of Kandla Port, with investments exceeding ₹57,000 crores. Key projects include a ₹30,000 crore Mega Shipbuilding Facility and a ₹27,000 crore cargo terminal outside Kandla Creek, adding 135 MTPA capacity.
The Mega Shipbuilding Facility will span over 8,000 acres, enabling the construction of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) up to 3,20,000 tonnes DWT and repairing 50 ships annually. It will also feature a marina, fishing harbor, township, and marine industrial cluster, creating significant trade opportunities and employment in ancillary industries.
The new cargo terminal, located near Tuna, will utilize a 6 km waterfront to add 135 MTPA to Kandla Port’s existing capacity. This state-of-the-art facility aligns with the Prime Minister’s 'Make in India, Make for the World' vision.
The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) is driving other projects to enhance port capacity. A mega cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra with 2.19 million TEU capacity is underway under PPP mode. Plans for a multi-cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra, adding 18.33 MTPA, are in progress. Three new oil jetties will boost capacity by 10 MTPA, while a Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) and two product jetties at Vadinar will add 24.5 MTPA. A ship repair facility at Vadinar, capable of servicing 32 vessels annually, is also being considered.
