JICA injects ₹2,470-cr in Chennai ring road project
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Central government have signed an agreement to provide an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan of 40,074 million Japanese Yen amounting to ₹2,470 crore, for the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road Project (Phase 1). The mega road venture has been placed as a priority project in the "Comprehensive Integrated Master Plan for Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. The main objective of the project is to ease vehicular traffic in the Chennai Metropolitan area and promote economic development in the region by improving connectivity with other national highways and facilitating access to the Ennore Port. The project includes installation of toll and highway traffic management systems, which will enhance safety, efficiency and comfort of the travellers. Section 1 of the road with 24.52-km long stretch consists of the Northern Port Access Road (Ennore Port to Thatchur), which is the northern part of the planned Chennai Peripheral Ring Road. The Highways and Minor Ports Department (HMPD), of the state government is the executing agency for the first part of the project, which will establish direct connectivity between Ennore and Katupally ports
