Meghalaya gets Rs 1,042 Crore Infrastructure Push with Water, Roads, Power and Healthcare Projects
The projects are aimed at strengthening water supply, road connectivity, healthcare and power infrastructure across the state.
Among the projects, the largest is the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase II, Part A, which has an estimated cost of Rs 850.58 crore and is being developed under the Urban Challenge Fund.
The Vice-President also laid the foundation stones for two road connectivity projects under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), a 30-bedded AYUSH facility at Shillong Civil Hospital and a 132/33 KV substation at Mawkhanu under PM-DevINE.
He also inaugurated the Maternity and Children’s Hospital at Nongstoin, which has been completed at a cost of Rs 31.05 crore under the National Health Mission.
Radhakrishnan highlighted the importance of connectivity in the Northeast and said efforts are being made to connect remote villages with towns and cities. He noted that more than 46,000 km of rural roads have been constructed in the Northeast under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) over the past decade, with expenditure exceeding Rs 47,000 crore.
He also appreciated Meghalaya’s reform-linked MoU under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.
The Vice-President said infrastructure development must remain inclusive while preserving Meghalaya’s environment, culture and traditions. He also highlighted the state’s initiatives in infrastructure and tourism, including its homestay programme, CM-Elevate and Green Meghalaya.
Speaking at a public reception in Shillong, Radhakrishnan said Meghalaya’s natural environment, cultural heritage and grassroots institutions reflect India’s diversity. He stressed the need for mutual respect, social harmony and development that leaves no section of society behind.
He also emphasised Meghalaya’s relationship with nature, citing the state’s living-root bridges and the landscapes of Sohra and Mawsynram as examples of sustainable coexistence with the environment.
