Gauhati University gets Rs 110 Crore Infrastructure Projects
The projects are aimed at strengthening the university’s academic and residential infrastructure and supporting its expansion as a higher education institution in Northeast India.
Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan highlighted Gauhati University’s historic role as the first university in Northeast India, established on January 26, 1948. He noted that the university has since developed into a premier regional institution and currently holds NAAC A+ accreditation and ranks ninth among State Public Universities in NIRF 2025.
He also highlighted the university’s research in areas including the Brahmaputra Basin, endangered languages, multilingualism, women’s studies, environmental sustainability and Indian Knowledge Systems.
Radhakrishnan said research focused on the Brahmaputra Basin was particularly important given the river’s ecological, economic and civilisational significance, and stressed the need for research addressing regional as well as national challenges.
The Vice-President also appreciated Gauhati University’s efforts to preserve India’s linguistic heritage and encouraged greater academic and literary exchanges between Assam and Tamil Nadu, including the translation of Assamese and Tamil literary works.
He highlighted the expansion of India’s higher education ecosystem since 2014 and noted a 42.2 per cent increase in women’s enrolment in higher education, from 1.57 crore in 2014-15 to 2.24 crore in 2023-24.
Radhakrishnan also urged students and scholars to contribute to the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision through research, innovation and solutions to community-level challenges, while emphasising the need for technology to serve humanity and support inclusive development.
On the occasion, he released “Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Songs”, edited by Ankuran Dutta and Nani Gopal Mahanta, along with the fifth revised and enlarged edition of “Chandrakanta Abhidhan”.
The programme also included a cultural performance by Gauhati University students and a “No to Drugs” pledge led by the Vice-President.
