India’s Road Sector Revenue to Rise from ₹55,000 Cr to ₹1.4 Lakh Cr in 2 Years: Nitin Gadkari
Addressing the CII National Conference on “Future of Smart Roads – Safety, Sustainability and Resilience,” Shri Gadkari outlined three key pillars for the future of infrastructure — People, Prosperity, and Planning. He emphasized that infrastructure must be people-centric, ensuring comfort and convenience for citizens. To support this vision, 670 roadside amenities have already been developed across the country.
The Minister noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2027, the road and transport sector will play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, investment, and employment. He highlighted that work is in progress to upgrade 25,000 km of two-lane highways into four lanes, alongside a ₹2 lakh crore port connectivity programme linking all major ports to national highways.
Improved connectivity, he said, is also boosting religious tourism and adventure sports across several regions. Highlighting the prosperity pillar, Shri Gadkari stated that every rupee invested in infrastructure generates three rupees of economic growth, demonstrating its strong multiplier effect.
On the planning front, the Minister stressed the need for eco-friendly and resilient infrastructure, noting that 8,500 trees were transplanted along the Dwarka Expressway as part of the Government’s green initiatives. He further announced that the use of precast technology is now mandatory in all road and infrastructure projects to enhance quality and ensure timely completion, while urging greater accountability among engineers and contractors.
Highlighting the economic importance of the sector, Shri Gadkari said that 80% of goods traffic in India moves by road, with 1% by air and 18% through other modes. As road infrastructure improves, logistics and fuel costs are expected to fall to single-digit levels.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to safe, sustainable, and world-class road development, Shri Gadkari said India is building “Smart Roads” that integrate technology with pedestrian access, EV charging, parking, fuel stations, and modern roadside amenities, ensuring a balanced approach between infrastructure growth and environmental responsibility.
