Indian Army Deploys Troops for Flood Relief in Vijayawada Amid Canal Breach
The Indian Army has been called in by the District Collector of Vijayawada to assist in flood relief operations after the Budameru Canal breached at three points, causing severe flooding in areas such as Ajith Singh Nagar and YSR Colony. With the possibility of further rainfall exacerbating the situation, a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) infantry column from 6 MADRAS, led by Lt Col Amit Sharma, was swiftly airlifted from Hakimpet Airforce Station to Vijayawada by an Indian Air Force AN-32 aircraft.
The infantry column, comprising 100 military personnel and carrying flood relief supplies and engineering equipment, is focused on closing the breaches in the canal. In addition, Major Mourya Vamsi, the Regimental Medical Officer, has been coordinating with civil administration to distribute medical supplies in the heavily flooded and isolated areas, reaching over 300 stranded residents in AS Nagar, YSR Colony, and Janagham Colony using civil dinghies.
Medical teams, led by Major Vamsi, have set up a static medical camp at Janagam Nagar and are operating mobile medical detachments on dinghies to provide aid in the submerged regions of YSR Colony and AS Nagar. Efforts are underway to procure additional medical supplies, including anti-malaria drugs, to prevent the spread of diseases in the flooded areas.
Lt Col Amit Sharma is maintaining regular contact with the District Collector and has scheduled a meeting to identify further areas in need of emergency rations and medical supplies, as well as to provide updates on the breach repair operations.
