Govt targets Rs. 2,956-cr housing units

Setting an ambitious target of building 78,703 affordable housing units at an investment worth Rs. 2,956-cr under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal, the central government has approved 15 lakh homes under the program to date. The funds also included central assistance of Rs. 1,180.54-cr and in the process the government approved around 52,336 more houses for the economically weaker section (EWS) in Tamil Nadu, around 21,285 more houses for West Bengal and 5,082 houses for the benefit of urban poor in Kerala. With this, the total number of houses approved for the benefit of urban poor under PMAY (Urban), launched since in June last year reached 15,48,846. Total investment approved for construction of these houses is Rs. 82,708cr, which includes central assistance of Rs. 21,125.36cr, said official sources.
