The new Union government shortly after taking over at the Centre has set a target of ₹30 lakh crores as investment towards transportation infrastructure covering railways, highways, airports and ports. Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goel and Hardeep Singh Puri who are spearheading roads, railways and civil aviation, respectively, have their tasks cut out in implementing the massive infrastructure projects under the program. While Indian Railways is getting a major chunk of the outlay of ₹10-12 lakh crore, ₹9 lakh crore will go to the roads and highways and the remaining will be invested in the civil aviation sector. Transport infrastructure is expected to see a major jump of ₹25-30 trillion of capital outlay over the next five years. Construction companies will witness strong order inflows, estimated between ₹15-18 trillion. The BJP manifesto has proposed to construct 12,000 km of national highways every year until 2024. ICRA said that the target was achievable given that the length of highways constructed in 2018-19 touched 10,000 km.
