Govt clears 3,246-km economic corridor in NE

The transport ministry has recently cleared a road length worth 3246-km in northeast to be developed as Economic Corridor and that the project will be developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana (BMP), said official sources, claiming that the road stretches aggregating to about 5301 km in northeastern states have been approved for improvement. They said adding that development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs) is a continuous process and the highways are kept in traffic-worthy condition depending upon the availability of funds and inter priority. Under the Special Accelerated Road Development Program for North-East (SARDP-NE) including Arunachal Package of Roads and Highways, 6,418 km of road stretches of National Highways and State Roads have been taken up to improve the connectivity in the northeastern region. In order to expedite road construction, the ministry has set up a company named as ―National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for construction, upgradation, widening of National Highways in the region.
