Government Advances Intelligent Transport Systems for Safer Highways
The government is promoting the implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to enhance road safety and reduce accidents, traffic violations, and incident response times. ITS can function as an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) or be integrated into broader Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication systems.
ATMS solutions are being deployed on key highways and expressways, including the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Trans-Haryana Expressway, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, and Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway. Phased implementation is planned nationwide. On the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, data revealed a significant reduction in fatalities after ATMS installation in July 2024, showcasing its effectiveness.
While Smart Cities Mission focuses on urban areas, highways traverse diverse regions, necessitating tailored approaches for ITS integration. Under the "Central Assistance for Strengthening ITS in Public Transport" scheme, the government also supports State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs) in adopting advanced ICT and ITS technologies for buses, further enhancing public transport efficiency.
