NHAI has launched construction work of the 1,320-km long Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway involving an estimated cost worth ₹90,000 crore. The work of the mega project is being taken up in three phases at a cost of ₹45,000 crore and work has already been awarded for a part of phase I, while awarding of contracts for the remaining phases will be completed shortly. The existing Delhi-Mumbai National Corridor (NH-8 section of the Golden Quadrilateral) is one of the busiest and most critical routes of the national highways network. Considering the present traffic scenario, the Union government has attempted to create seamless connectivity between Delhi and Mumbai and improve the efficiency of this highly trafficked national corridor as an alternative alignment connecting Delhi with Vadodara, which on linking with the proposed Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, is expected to reduce the current distance between the two major metros by 150 km. Apart from this, the agency has also launched a 29-km Dwarka Expressway at a cost of ₹9,000 crore, which is a section of NH-8 and also a part of Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Mumbai arm of Golden Quadrilateral project, falling about 18.9 kms in Haryana and 10.1 kms in the national capital, said NHAI sources.
