Metro Projects
In a major boost to public transport in the Diamond City, the Union cabinet has approved the Surat Metro Rail project entailing an investment of ₹12,114 crore. The city will also in the near future see pre-construction activities for a Metro rail project of 2 corridors of 40-kms from Sarthana to Dream City and Bhesan to Saroli in the first phase. The route from Sarthana to Dream City will provide seamless transport to those engaged in the diamond business living in Varachha and Katargam to the Surat Diamond Bourse. The second route – Saroli to Bhesan – is expected to provide a means of alternative transport to a large working-class travelling between the west zone and Udhna. The congestion in Walled City areas will also ease considerably with the 6.47 km underground route from Kapodara to Maskati Hospital. Prior to this, the Public Investment Board (PIB) had given the go-ahead to the project, which was sent to the finance department of the Union Cabinet, and construction work is set to start on a fast-track basis.
