The East Central Railway (ECR) has launched the construction of a rail line directly linking Patna with Kathmandu in Nepal at an investment of ₹16,550 crore. The project would be commissioned by 2021. GM of ECR, L C Trivedi said that the railways has already started working on Jayanagar–Barbidas (Nepal) and Raxaul–Kathmandu rail routes with active cooperation from the Nepal government. There is already an operational rail line between Patna and Raxaul and the upcoming Raxaul–Kathmandu line will provide the connectivity between Patna and the national capital of Nepal. The 67-km-long Jayanagar-Barbidas project, which is funded by the ministry of external affairs, is being implemented by Indian Railway Construction Company (Ircon), said chief public relations officer, ECR, Rajesh Kumar. The contractor has so far laid new rakes up to 34-km between Jaynagar and Kurtha in Nepal involving an investment of ₹787 crore. The railways also decided to lay new lines at a stretch of around 136-km between Raxaul and Kathmandu, connecting Birganj, Nijgadh, Shikharpur and Sisneri. A MoU was signed between India and Nepal last year for the project. The Raxaul-Kathmandu rail line will have 13 stoppages, including Raxaul, Birganj, Bagahi, Pipara, Dhumarwana, Kakadi, Nijgarh, Chandrapur, Dhiyal, Shikharpur, Sisneri, Sathikhel and Kathamandu and will house 32 rail-over bridges and 39 tunnels, he added.
