Centre takes up ₹ 60,000-cr Godavari-Cauvery link project
The Centre is all set to take up a major project to link the Godavari and Cauvery rivers that would resolve the water war between four southern states. The project, that entails an investment of ₹ 60,000 crore, will aim to make optimum use of about 1100 tmc ft of Godavari water that currently drains into the Bay of Bengal. The DPR for the Godavari-Krishna-Pennar-Cauvery is ready and is being sent to the Cabinet for mandatory approval, following which, the government will seek funds from the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank. Low thickness, specially-treated steel pipes will be used to reduce project cos as suggested by a US-based AP engineer. Canals will also not be used as it results in water (evaporation) losses.
