Cabinet clears ₹1,600-cr for Debang hydro project

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared ₹1,600 crore for pre-investment activities for the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh involving an investment worth ₹28,080.35 crore. The 2,880 mw hydropower project will be the largest ever to be constructed in India. At 278 meters, it will be the highest dam completed. Arunachal Pradesh will get 12 percent free power from the project, said IB Minister Prakash Javdekar. One percent free power will be given in Local Area Development Fund (LADF). The total benefit to the state from free power and contribution to the LADF will be ₹26,785 crore over the project's life of 40 years. In a related development, the cabinet also approved the proposal for a Dam Safety Bill, 2019 in parliament, enabling surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of all specified dams in the country to ensure their safe functioning.
