Irrespective of the cost escalation due to change in the design, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) in a recent initiative has decided to build the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, the civic body's pet project to improve connectivity between the city's eastern and western suburbs. The estimated cost of the project is now Rs 3,800 crore, which means that over the past three years, the costs of the GMLR, the fourth east-west connector, has increased by 65%. In the newest design the civic body added three flyovers, one underpass, one rotary or a roundabout and a box tunnel to ease traffic congestion and these additions have added another Rs1,100 crore to the project. To ease traffic from the Western Express Highway to Oberoi mall in Goregaon, it will also construct an underpass instead of a road for motorists. After BMC officials realized that the traffic congestion at four junctions from AN Vaidya Marg to Film City Road would cause hardship to motorists, it decided to construct a flyover, which will lead to 1.6-km-long box tunnel and that a flyover will be constructed above LBS Road so that traffic can be diverted towards Nahur Road bridge ensuring smooth movement of vehicular traffic at the congested LBS Marg in Mulund area.
