In its bid to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic in the region, the state government in Bengal has recently announced the construction of three new bridge projects, said West Bengal Highway Development Corporation (WBHDC) in a statement. The projects included a six-lane bridge over river Hooghly, Howrah, Nivedita Setu or Vidyasagar Setu as the existing structures are not that much wide to cater to the burgeoning traffic requirement. The new bridge is likely to be set up parallel to the existing Vidyasagar Setu or the Second Hooghly Bridge with a gap of about 20 metres. The government has planned a cable-stayed bridge using advanced technology that is touted to be the widest river bridge connecting two districts — Nadia and Hooghly — from Kalyani to Dankuni at an investment of Rs. 800 crore. It will also cut the commuting time to Kolkata by decongesting large parts of NH-34, BT Road and Dum Dum Road. Apart from this, WBHDC has also decided to build a four-laning project, connecting Dankuni, Chandannagar and also Mogra to Borojagulia and Kalyani without using the Vidyasagar Setu. Vehicles will get a much shorter route by taking this new four-lane road and then taking the new bridge avoiding Vidyasagar Setu thereby decongesting parts of NH-34 and Jessore Road.
