AAI unveils Kolkata Intl Airport expansion

AAI
Authorities at Kolkata airport are trying to consolidate space that it had leased out to other carriers for augmenting its infrastructure to cater to the double-digit growth that the facility has been experiencing in recent years. Airports Authority of India (AAI) is negotiating with carriers to relocate them into a single multi-level facility and free around 16 acres of land that they currently occupy. There is an urgent need to review the existing infrastructure and other airport-related facilities, and the authorities have identified the need to expand the terminal and widen the departure ramp. Kolkata airport director Kaushik Bhattacharjee said that about 10,000 cars use the departure level flyover to drop 30,000 passengers and several hundred crew members who take (about) 222 flights out of Kolkata daily; the planned expansion is to deal with the congested related problems.
