How data-driven container reuse reduced costs and emissions in 2025

In 2025, a series of operational changes across inland trade corridors began to alter how container movement was planned and executed. Shipping lines reduced emergency repositioning of equipment. Exporters in manufacturing clusters experienced fewer container shortages during peak booking periods. Inland transport networks saw a measurable decline in empty truck movement on repeat routes. These shifts were an outcome of the wider use of data to coordinate container reuse closer to where import and export flows overlapped.

This was important because inland logistics has historically absorbed inefficiency without clear accountability. According to World Bank estimates, inland transport can account for more than half of total door-to-door logistics costs in several emerging economies, with empty or underutilised movement forming a significant portion of that spend. By improving how containers were sequenced and redeployed inland, data-driven reuse began to address a cost centre that had long been treated as unavoidable.
