World Bank to fund safe road building projects
In a recent development in the country’s road sector, the World Bank is all set to finance the Core Road Development Project with a road safety component in Uttar Pradesh. In this connection, the current government in UP has taken up the project afresh with the World Bank, said sources, that a WB team recently held meetings with the officials of PWD, Home and transport departments to discuss various projects that the international institution is financing. Things took a final shape during a recent meeting of WB top brass and empowered officials of the state government. Sources said as per the proposal, the World Bank would provide $ 400 million as a soft loan to the state government that would contribute the remaining $170 million, said principal secretary, Aradhana Shukla, adding that $60 million was proposed to be spent on various road safety projects. The project included setting up of a highway policing, removing blacks spots, strengthening the road safety cell and setting up driving training schools.
