Vedanta’s BALCO Expands Aluminium Wire Rod Production to Meet Infra Demand
Vedanta Aluminium’s subsidiary, Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), is ramping up aluminium wire rod production as part of its larger expansion to reach 1 MTPA capacity. This move comes amid rising demand for high-quality aluminium wire rods, driven by India’s rapid digital and industrial infrastructure growth, including 5G rollout, rural broadband, and smart cities.
In FY25, BALCO produced over 2,00,000 MTPA of BIS-certified wire rods, catering entirely to the domestic market, especially in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. The rods support critical applications like conductors, cable sheathing, tower grounding, and optical fibre cabling. BALCO was the first in India to receive BIS 5484 certification for alloy wire rods.
With India’s digital and power infrastructure accelerating, BALCO is in the final stages of commissioning strategic projects to double its total aluminium production capacity from 0.57 MTPA to 1 MTPA.

While telecom and power transmission are key sectors, BALCO’s aluminium wire rods also find essential applications across the automotive, electrical appliances, and steel industries, further enhancing their relevance to India’s industrial transformation.
