Vadodara airport is all set to become second airport in the country to have national highway passing under its runway, said sources, claiming that underpass will be constructed on the existing NH-48 so that the existing runway of Vadodara airport gets extended for landing of big aircraft. Union ministry is ready for construction of such an underpass on the outskirts of the city. The civil aviation ministry coordinating with Indian Air Force, which owns a parcel of land near the existing runway, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Airports Authority of India. The aerodynamic-shaped terminal building of Vadodara airport was inaugurated by the PM on October 2016 but the existing runway – 8,100 feet – is not enough for big aircraft to land and remains dependent on Ahmedabad airport to board long distance direct flights to international destinations. It is also worth mentioning here that recently Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Babatpur – 26km from Varanasi – received a go-ahead for construction of such an underpass and made it th country's first airport to have a national highway under its runway.
