The state government in Uttarakhand is gearing up ensuring completion of an ambitious Rs.12,000 crore all-weather road on the Char Dham route by the end of next fiscal, said the government in a statement, claiming that more than 50% of the forest clearance work has been completed and close to 50% compensation for land acquisition has already been disbused. On the route, the government has identified 29 landslide zones where protection measures will be stiffened to ensure that the yatra is not impacted in any way after the commissioning of the project. It also informed that 33 public convenience centres will be set up, each at a distance of 30 to 35 km, on the entire stretch. The project is associated with the state‘s financial economy and will open up more job opportunities for local residents. Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal has disposed of a plea alleging that the road widening work for the project was carried out in violation of the green laws and both the Uttarakhand government and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) assured NGT that they would carry out the project after due compliance with the laws, especially the Bhagirathi eco-sensitive zone notification of December 18, 2012.
