NHAI has initiated steps to start the much-delayed semi-ring road project between Trichy-Karur NH and Trichy-Madurai NH as the move has come eight years after realigning the project, and was mooted 13 years ago. Once 90% of the compensation is disbursed, NHAI will float a tender to identify a suitable contractor to start civil work on the 18-km stretch linking Jeeyapuram with Panchapur. While implementing the project, the authorities have to ensure that no water body is harmed. The semi-ring road project was planned to decongest Trichy city by linking five national highways. A section of the road between Jeeyapuram on Trichy-Karur NH and Panchapur on Trichy-Madurai NH, passing through Thayanur on Trichy-Dindigul NH, faced stiff opposition from farmers in 2009 pleading that the project would disturb the water bodies.
