Shuttering Collapse at NH-66 Bridge in Kerala Prompts Strict Action
The shuttering of an under-construction bridge at Ayathil Junction on NH-66, part of the six-laning project from Kollam Bypass to Kadambattukonam, collapsed on November 28, 2024, during the concreting of the solid slab bridge.
In response, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has removed the Bridge Engineer and DGM (Structure) of the Concessionaire, along with the Team Leader of the Consulting Firm, for failing to assign personnel to inspect the project's ‘Request for Inspection’ (RFI).
To investigate the incident, NHAI has engaged Prof. T.P. Somasundaram (Retd.), NIT Calicut, and Railway Bridge Engineer Shri Padmajan to review the shuttering design and materials. They are scheduled to visit the site on November 29, 2024.
NHAI assured that all necessary remedial measures will be undertaken to address the issue and ensure project safety.
