The Union shipping ministry has targeted ₹4,142 crore of investment towards construction of 28 harbors across India under the Sagarmala program, which include four shipping harbors in Karnataka, six in Maharashtra, three in Gujarat, two in Odisha, five in Andhra Pradesh, two in Kerala and one in Goa. Among others, the projects will boost fishing activity in these regions. The minister also laid the foundation stone for Kulai fishing harbor at a cost of ₹196.51-crore and four major NH projects worth ₹3,728 crore. The new harbor will ease congestion at old Mangaluru port at Bunder and also allow fishermen of Kulai and adjoining areas to catch more fish and return to the harbour safely. The Kulai harbor on completion will boost direct employment opportunities to 2,300 fishermen and generate 1700 onshore employment opportunities.
