The ministry of railways has sanctioned ₹922 crore gauge conversion projects between Nagpur and Nagbhid with a length of 106-km and civil and construction work on long-pending gauge conversion project being taken up on a 50:50 sharing basis by the state and the South East Central Railway (SECR). Of the total investment of ₹922 crore, ₹673.84 crore has been earmarked for civil works; Rs182.42 crore for electrical work; and ₹65.74 crore for installing signaling systems. The broad-gauge project will ease transportation of coal to power plants in the region and after completion, it is expected to save Rs152 crore of Mahagenco annually due to reduction in transport distance of coal to the company‘s power plants from the mines in Chandrapur district. The new line will also provide an alternative route for passenger trains from Nagpur towards south for which the state cabinet had approved over ₹354 crore for the project. Of the 628-km narrow gauge network under Nagpur division of SECR, only Nagpur-Nagbhid is pending for conversion, said railway ministry sources.
