The Southern Coast Railway, in a recent development, has decided to build the 18th new zone of the Indian Railways at an investment of ₹205 crore, said railway minister Piyush Goyal. The new zone will be headquartered at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and will comprise the existing Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions that currently fall under the South Central Railway. The SCR will then consist of the Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Nanded divisions and the construction cost of the zone will be financed by the railway from its internal resources. It may be recalled that Indian Railways' operations are currently divided into 17 zones, which are further sub-divided, with each having a divisional headquarter. Currently, there are 73 divisions, seven new zones and eight new divisions.
