Sagarmala Programme Driving Port-Led Development

The Sagarmala programme, led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, aims to promote port-led development by leveraging India’s 7,500 km coastline, 14,500 km of navigable waterways, and strategic position on global trade routes.
Under this initiative, 839 projects worth ₹5.5 lakh crore have been identified, with 272 projects already completed at an investment of ₹1.41 lakh crore. The projects are implemented by central ministries, Indian Railways, NHAI, state governments, and major ports.
To ensure timely execution, the ministry regularly engages with state maritime boards, government agencies, and stakeholders through project-based and state-level meetings. The Maritime States Development Council (MSDC) has conducted 20 meetings, while the National Sagarmala Apex Committee oversees policy guidance and high-level coordination.
Beyond economic growth, Sagarmala strengthens India’s maritime presence in the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean. By modernizing ports and boosting trade, the programme enhances India’s competitiveness as a global maritime hub.
