Length of India's NHs increased by about 59% in last 9 years: Gadkari

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Shri Nitin Gadkari, informed that the total length of National Highways in India has increased by approximately 59% over the past nine years, making it the second largest road network in the world, after the US. In the same period, the length of 4-lane National Highways has nearly doubled, growing from 18,371 km in 2013-14 to 44,654 km.

Gadkari highlighted the significant impact of FASTag on toll collection. The introduction of FASTag has led to a substantial increase in toll revenues, which rose from Rs 4,770 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 41,342 crore in 2022-23. The government aims to further increase toll revenue to Rs 1,30,000 crore by 2030.

One of the notable benefits of FASTag implementation is the reduction in waiting time at toll plazas. In 2014, the average waiting time was 734 seconds, whereas in 2023, it has decreased to 47 seconds. Gadkari expressed optimism that the waiting time will be further reduced to 30 seconds in the near future. This reduction in waiting time has resulted in substantial savings, estimated at approximately Rs 70,000 crore in fuel expenses, as per research.

Gadkari emphasized the expansion of the road highway network in the North East region, with projects worth over Rs 2 lakh crore currently underway. Additionally, 670 road side facilities are being developed to enhance the travel experience along National Highways.

The Minister also highlighted the success of NHAI's INVIT (Infrastructure Investment Trust) model, which witnessed overwhelming response, with the bond issue being oversubscribed by seven times within the first day of availability on the Mumbai Stock Exchange. Shri Gadkari urged investors to consider NHAI INVIT, offering an attractive interest rate of 8.05%, surpassing traditional bank rates.

Furthermore, he underlined the NHAI's commitment to green initiatives. The transplantation of over 68,000 trees and planting of 3.86 crore trees in the last nine years were mentioned. The NHAI has also developed more than 15,000 Amrit Sarovars (water rejuvenation initiatives) along National Highways across the country.

In pursuit of sustainable infrastructure development, the Ministry utilized 30 lakh tons of garbage for road construction in the Delhi Ring Road project, showcasing their proactive approach towards waste management. Additionally, the introduction of bamboo crash barriers was highlighted for their strength, durability, and positive impact on employment and environmental sustainability.

He also unveiled a vision for increased Electric Vehicle adoption over the next five years, aligning with the government's commitment to clean energy and the reduction of carbon emissions.
