Govt increases allocation to NHAI for road maintenance by 44%

NHAI
The Union transport ministry has increased the allocation to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the maintenance of national highways (NHs) by 44%, or ₹1,300 crore. This is in addition to the existing allocation of ₹900 crore for the current financial year. The additional funds will be used specifically for the NHAI's drive to make all its stretches pothole-free. The allocation for maintenance of NHs by state public works departments (PWDs) has also been revised to ₹280 crore from ₹132 crore, and additional funds have been allocated for the repair of roads damaged by rain in various states. The ministry stated that even with the increased allocation, the current level of funding for the maintenance of road assets managed by the highway authority and state PWDs is still insufficient, as approximately 50% of the NH network in the country is managed by state PWDs, which receive funding from the road transport ministry.
