Road Infrastructure Key to Viksit Bharat 2047 Vision: MoS Harsh Malhotra

Minister of State for Road, Transport & Highways and Corporate Affairs, Shri Harsh Malhotra, underscored the socio-economic impact of robust road infrastructure, stating that a well-developed road network is essential for regional prosperity and a key driver in realizing the Prime Minister's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Addressing the 233rd Mid-Term Council Meeting of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) at Mizoram University, Aizawl, Shri Malhotra noted that India’s National Highway network has expanded by over 60% in the last 11 years—from 91,000 km in 2014 to approximately 1.47 lakh km today.

He stressed the importance of adopting globally proven technologies and reducing construction costs without compromising on quality. Highlighting the need for sustainable development, he advocated for eco-friendly methodologies and cutting-edge construction practices in road building.

Praising the IRC for its critical role in shaping India's road sector, the Minister emphasized that highway construction is guided by IRC’s standards, codes, and quality benchmarks. He acknowledged the IRC as a multi-dimensional body with participation from central and state agencies, the Army’s engineering services, and the Border Roads Organisation.

Reaffirming the government's commitment to North East India's development, he said the region has seen a transformative boost with nearly 10,000 km of National Highways built over the past 11 years at an investment of ₹1.07 lakh crore. This, he said, has significantly enhanced connectivity to remote and border areas.

“Infrastructure is more than just concrete and steel—it is the foundation of economic growth and a symbol of our journey toward a resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive India,” Shri Malhotra concluded.
