The local administrations of four states have granted permission to road building agencies and their contractors to start construction work in their respective states. The states included Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have given permission to resume road construction and repair work including projects that were left unfinished due imposition of lockdown across the country, said official sources in these states, elaborating that about eight to ten districts of these states, district magistrates have allowed road construction to resume, although in a controlled manner. It may be recalled that the concerned Union Minister, had in the recent past mooted a proposal on gradual lifting of curbs on construction activity in non-hotspot areas. Construction has been allowed in Muzaffarpur, Chapra, Khagaria and Supaul in Bihar, Shivpuri and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, Bhavnagar in Gujarat, and Nagpur in Maharashtra. Contractors at these sites have given undertakings that work will be carried out with strict precautions. “Local administrations, however, must ensure movement of goods like steel and cement, while facilitating arrival of migrant workers for smooth functioning. Chairman of Feedback Infra, Vinayak Chatterjee, insisted. According to government sources, around 50-60% laborers or construction workers are available at large project sites across the country.
