The Rail Land Development Authority has invited online bids to select a developer for the redevelopment of Ernakulum Railway Station at Kochi in Kerala. The project involves two components, station component and commercial component, with a total investment of ₹229 crore. The station redevelopment component is scheduled for completion in three years. Buoyed by rapid infrastructural developments, growth of the IT/ITes sector and proliferation of retail spaces, Kochi is among the fastest-growing cities in India. The Ernakulum Railway Station is strategically located near the bus stand and well-connected through public transportation with Kochi. Ernakulam South Metro Station has also come up near the Railway Station. The redevelopment of the station will give a fillip to real estate and retail spaces in the vicinity and spur the regional transformation. Vice Chairman of RLDA, Ved Prakash Dudeja, informed that it Ernakulum Railway Station covers around 48-acre of land, consisting of six platforms and two terminal buildings and both the entries are accessible via public transport with the KSRTC Bus Stand in the north and Manorama and Valanjambalam Junctions in the southern end. The objective of redevelopment is to provide world-class amenities such as departure passenger entry hall, arrival passenger exit hall, air-concourses, F&B, baggage security check-in area, an information centre /enquiry centre and disabled-friendly facilities to commuters.
