India’s steel industry recorded steady growth in May 2026, with crude steel production increasing 1.9% year-on-year to 14.1 million tonnes (MT), while finished steel production rose 6.8% to 13.8 MT, according to the Ministry of Steel.

During April-May FY27, crude steel production reached 28.0 MT, up 2.6% from the corresponding period last year, while finished steel output grew 5.9% to 27.2 MT. Finished steel consumption also remained robust, rising 9.3% year-on-year to 14.4 MT in May and 8.8% to 27.4 MT during April-May, reflecting strong domestic demand.

India's crude steelmaking capacity stood at approximately 221.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of May 2026, keeping the industry on track to achieve the National Steel Policy target of 300 MTPA by 2030.

Despite higher domestic production, India remained a net importer of finished steel during April-May 2026. Imports surged 45% year-on-year to 1.37 million tonnes, led by shipments from China, South Korea and Japan, while exports increased 27.4% to 976,800 tonnes.

Steel prices remained largely stable in June, with hot rolled coil prices easing marginally while TMT bars declined 4.7% month-on-month. Meanwhile, domestic iron ore prices increased by around 4%, whereas scrap and manganese ore prices softened.

The Ministry highlighted continued progress on sustainability initiatives, including SAIL's Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for TMT bars and the operation of a 15 MW floating solar power plant at Bhilai Steel Plant. The report also noted that SAIL and NMDC are exploring overseas coking coal assets to strengthen long-term raw material security.
